2019 Conference Highlights

DAY 1 April 12
1.     Dadaab Cohort Presentations 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM Toronto (4:00 PM – 5:00PM)
Live from Dadaab, the conference opens with presentations from 5 students from the BEHR program: Abdullahi Aden, Arte Saman, Okello Mark Oyat, Robert Ocan Leomoi, and Abdikadir Bare Abikar. The presentation will be broadcasted to Toronto where you can interact with the presenters in real-time by joining us in Winters 117.
2.     YGSE Welcome Breakfast and Registration 9:00 to 9:30
 
Join us for breakfast and get all the 411 to help you enrich your conference experience. The first 45 students to register for the conference will also receive a special gift at registration.
3.     Conference Key Note Panel 9:45-11:15
This year’s key note panel features our Graduate Program Director, Doctor Qiang Zha and our Doctoral Seminar Leader and Faculty Chair, Doctor Aparna Mishra-Tarc. These faculty members will provide an engaging discussion on the conference theme “Education in Action”
4.     Panels on Decolonization and Alternative Pedagogies 11:30 to 12:45
 
Our second set of panel presentations will feature a panel on decolonization featuring the studies of Nadia Younes and Justyn Mahanger and the research of Joanne Edmundson Kistruck and Jenna Santry on mindfulness.
5.     Faculty-Student Lunch and Social 12:45 – 2:15
 
YGSE invites our professors and graduate students to join us for the final term Faculty-Student Social. It is an opportunity to build your relationships with faculty and students.
6.     Panels on Pedagogical Design and Marginalize Voices 2:30 to 3:45
Our third set of panels feature the research of Taru Malhorta, Andrew Molas, and Alison Correia on pedagogical design and research from Sabina Mirza and Arthur Burrows on marginalized voices in education.
7.     Panels on Pedagogical Design and Marginalize Voices 2:30 to 3:45
Day 1 will finish with our fourth set of panels with research of Shamiga Arumuhathas, Firrisaa Abdulkarim, and Michelle Milani on access and equity issues in education and studies from Meng Xiao, Chistopher Bentley, and Doug Anderson on transforming environments for education.
DAY 2 APRIL 13
8.     Panels Addressing Difficult Topics With Children and Racialized Bodies in Education: 10:00 am to 11:15
 
We start day 2 with Elisha Gauthier and Ashley Gymati who will be presenting research on addressing difficult topics with children and research from Pritania Sewell and Isaac Coplan on racialized bodies in education.
9.     Panels on Critical Pedagogies and New Canadians
 
The 6th set of panels will be followed by research of Nancy Rostom, Rida Faisal and Annette Jubril on critical pedagogy and the research of Soria Noori and Abbey Duggal on new Canadians.
10.  YGSE Lunch 12:45 – 1:45pm
We will break for lunch, featuring a lovely spread in a relaxing space ideal to discuss and reflect on the presentations and take a moment to socialize with our cohort.
11.  Panel on Gender 1:45-3:00pm
Our final panel for the conference will feature the research of Lee Iskander, Kaajal Balkaran, and Rabia Khokhar as they discuss issues of gender, love, and literature in education.
12.  The YGSE Conference closing social 3:00 to 5:00pm
We will book-end this conference with a bang with our end of term social. Be sure to join us to have some fun and enjoy the company of your cohort, participate in our end of term raffle and allow us to say, “good-bye” to our graduating friends and see you in September to our returning colleagues.
